Do you dream about the good ole days of Southern Gospel music when a concert was exciting, fun, and spiritually uplifting? The music was always "just right" - never too loud and the singers were neat and well-groomed. Well, you can stop dreaming because here comes "The Southmen Quartet" and they are bringing the good ole days with them.

Jim Hefner, the tenor member of this group, is the president of the Southern Gospel Promoters Association, of which Cindy Drost is a member. Other members of this quartet, based out of the Alabama area, include Buddy Burton - lead, Larry Beck - baritone, Buddy Poe - bass, and Eddie Crook - piano. These five gentlemen bring a vast amount of experience in quartet music, having performed with several legendary groups.

When Jim Hefner called Cindy to tell her "The Southmen quartet" would be traveling through Iowa on their way north for a Canada tour, she sent out a "concert e-mail blast" asking if any of her Southern Gospel friends would be willing to host this group in their church for a concert. The day after Craig & Janyce Johnstone from the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church, and Palmer & Sandra Rhoades from the Pella Church of the Nazarene, scheduled "The Southmen," Jim Hefner found out the thrilling news that "The Southmen" will be the featured group on the cover of the March edition of The Singing News magazine coming out in February. Congratulations!

Red Roots

Sunday, April 22, 2012

The following free-will offering concerts will be held:

10:15 a.m. - The Red Roots will be part of the worship service at The Rising Sun Church of Christ, 6390 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill, Iowa

6:00 p.m. - A full concert at the First Christian Church (Disciples in Christ), 119 A Ave. East, Oskaloosa, Iowa

This group, which caught my attention at the 2010 National Quartet Convention, consists of three 20-year-old sisters (triplets): Nika, Natalie and Nichole Taylor, from Harley, Mississippi. These very talented girls play their own instruments and sing with a Christian country sound and style. The mission of Red Roots is to use music as a tool to spread the truth and love of Christ. Although the name Red Roots comes from their naturally red hair, most of all it comes from their faith that is rooted in the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Red Roots was honored to be in the top five nominations for the category of Horizon Group of the Year in The Singing News Fan Awards, the Southern Gospel industry's premiere fan-voted awards show, on Sept. 28, 2011, at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
